What is emotional regulation?

Emotional regulation is one of four main behavior skills modules taught in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).

Everyone has moments when emotions drown out rational thought. The surge of negative feelings may cause you to act impulsively or in a way you will regret later. Why? Your personal belief system or interpretation of an event may actually amplify troubling emotions. This is especially true if you’re already struggling with anxiety or depression..

Unchecked emotions can lead to destructive or dysfunctional behaviors. They can actually make bad situations worse.

Emotional regulation is a DBT skill focused on learning and practicing specific skills to encourage mental wellness and rationally deal with powerful emotions.

When you take care of yourself--physically, mentally, and emotionally--you develop a resilience when times get tough. Instead of overreacting, you are prepared to deal with intense emotions in a calm, rational way.

Emotional regulation teaches self-care, coping skills, and the importance of engaging in positive, fulfilling activities for your mental wellness. These skills are taught during DBT groups or individual therapy. When struggling with very intense emotions, you also have access to additional assistance with DBT phone coaching.
